July 01, 2007iPhone + Facebook PlatformOne thing painfully missing from the iPhone is a platform development environment. You know, something like, oh, Facebook's new platform environment.Wouldn't that be something: Thousands of developers building iPhone apps that millions of iPhone users could then select and install after browsing a huge new apps directory in iTunes. A meritocracy of coolness. That giant sucking sound would be the vacuum created by FB developers flocking to build apps for the iPhone. Comments
I suspect that, like MP3-to-ringtones, preventing the development of third-party apps was one absolute condition of AT&T's partnership. What potential app could be so terrifying that they'd risk losing the exclusive rights to the iPhone? Skype, and anything else that bypasses their network for phone calls.
